The Association for Media Education in Quebec (AMEQ) is a small, bilingual organization with about 12 active members and a mailing list of about 65. Formed in September 1990, the members of the association have long contended that media literacy should be included in the curriculum from Kindergarten to Grade 11.

To this end, over the past few years, AMEQ has been working with Education Québec to develop the media education components of the new elementary curriculum.

AMEQ also co-founded and is actively involved in the Centre de ressources en éducation aux médias, described below.

AMEQ members are leaders in media education, providing:

  • annual media literacy conferences for teachers, parents and community workers
  • student media festivals
  • day-long workshops and parent information evenings
  • workshops at provincial and national education and parent conferences, and in school-board professional development programs
  • media education courses in faculties of education at Bishop's University and McGill University

This umbrella organization for groups with media education interests was formed in Quebec in November 1998. Le Centre de ressources en éducation aux medias (CREM) is a non-profit organization whose goal is to ensure support and follow-up for the development and implementation of media education in Quebec schools. CREM has sponsored, facilitated and provided teachers with French training sessions on media literacy and its incorporation into the new curriculum.

In October 1999, CREM partnered with Québec Education and the Centre de liaison de l’enseignement avec les moyens d’information (based in France), to host a conference in Quebec City. Held in advance of Quebec's curriculum reform, the aim of the conference was to raise awareness about media education and the ways that it can be integrated across the curriculum. Two hundred teachers, school principals, school board consultants, ministry of education officials and researchers attended the conference.

In partnership with the Quebec Association of Applied Educational Technologies, AMEQ and CREM will be co-sponsoring the 2003 annual conference for the Association for Media and Technology in Education in Canada (AMTEC) in Montreal.
